Ryzen 1600 Temps

Hi,

I recently built a new Ryzen system and decided to start overclocking it today. I'm using the stock cooler and only really need a modest OC until I buy an aftermarket solution. So I manage to hit 3.6 GHz and my idle temps are roughly 48 degrees (Celsius) but when I boot up Prime95 after about 10 minutes I am hitting 91, sometimes even 93 degrees. Anyone else having this sort of issue/ can give me any advice? I am only putting 1.238V (according to Hardware monitor) through the CPU so could the issue be that somehow the stock cooler isn't installed properly or is this just a case of me needing to dial down my overclock? When I was running at stock speeds my CPU was hitting around 73 degrees under load.

I should note I'm overclocking on the Gigabyte X370 Gaming K5.

Thanks

are you certain that the reported temp is correct? Are you using RyzenMaster for OC?

What are your temps under normal circumstances? Prime95 is a heavy stressor. I would use it if only for stability.

yes I'm sure, I am overclocking in the BIOS and using both RyzenMaster and Hardware monitor for temp monitoring!

how's the airflow in your case?

Got the Phanteks P400S Tempered Glass with the stock fans at the moment, a 120mm exhaust in the rear and a 120mm intake at the front bottom. Reckon I should move the front 120mm upwards so I get more airflow over my RAM and stock cooler?

that's not a lot of air at all. I have the same case (minus the glass, much jelly). that air needs a lot more persuasion to leave the case.

I decided to go all out with the TG hehe! Ok what would you recommend? Three 140mm, two intake at the front and one rear exhaust? What's your current setup?

My setup is a bit odd at the moment, but i'm also liquid cooled so i dont really have the same problems.

280mm rad at the front w/ 1x140mm Corsair SP140L fan at the bottom (for GPU intake), twin 140mm BQ! SW3 PWM fans at the top on a splitter, phantek case fan at the rear.

the reason i have a single fan on the rad is because i broke the SHIT out of the other fan being careless.

SO i was testing on an open bench. I had a GPU that didn't have a fan, just passive cooler. and it was overheating so i thought HEY, i've got a spare fan i'll just let it blow slowly on the GPU's fins to cool it. and it worked... a nice gentle breeze keep it cool.

but then i decided to restart the computer. and i didn't really have it locked down in anything. a pair of books would have sufficed. but i thought that the speed was manageable.

i forgot it went to full speed at startup.

it took off like a planeless propeller and engine. What it ended up hitting, i don't know, but it slammed into something and exploded like a hand grenade.

Oh... my... gawd! I woulda shit myself if a fan started to take off like a bloody plane. Can imagine you weren't a fan of the whole situation (ok that was awful).

Quick update, I moved my 120mm higher up the front of the case and now my max temps at 3.6GHz are a solid 79 degrees which I would say is a damn sight better. Never the less I have some Corsair 140mm AF quiet edition fans on the way!

Thanks for all your help knight :)

you're welcome. I've got a replacement fan coming from Corsair so the single 140L doesn't have to work so hard. Coolant temp is pretty good at 36.5*C, but RPM is pretty high and i even have the front cover removed so it doesn't have to work so hard and honestly i want the filtration on there. i'm sure you get it.

I get ya don't worry man. I've just now had issues with microstutter when playing my games :(. Not exactly sure what is causing the issue.... One minute my fps will be perfectly fine (im talking 100+ fps at 1440p here) and then for 1-2 seconds it dips into the 10-40 fps range. Any advice? Temps are all perfectly fine, my CPU usage spikes and GPU usage drops.

Doing this with far higher overclock you either did not fit the cooler properly or the thermal paste is not applied properly.

I'll replace the thermal paste and make sure the cooler is on properly then! I'll update in a day or two :)
