Ubuntu ... easy from start to finish.

Hi!

 

I'm planning on building a media server for my condo.

I'm already looking at used 30-40$ PCs but most of them do not have HDDs included.

For the ones that do have, I'm not sure if an OEM copy of Windows is included.

 

ANYWAYS, just for learning's sake, if I were to use a new OS for the media server, what's the best Linux OS to use?

 

Main uses of the PC are:

download torrents

PC for my niece (browser games, YouTube, etc.)

NFS and/or SMB share for files/media

general PC stuff such as documents, printing, etc.

I forgot to add, I'm mostly familiar with Ubuntu. But I would like to see your recommendations.

I believe Ubuntu also has a server edition. An absolute breeze, if you need help installing PM me.

I've Used CentOS and that has been really stable and reliable, It took me a little bit to get used to after going from using Mint and Ubuntu. 

If you have experience with Ubuntu, i'd probably use their server version

not YET. I'm still finalizing costs and stuff ahahaha

 

I'm still considering the option to just transfer my current rig (on sig) to a bigger case (with 3.5" HDD slots) and make it a rig/media server, 2 birds in one stone kind of deal.
