Audio Technica ATH-M40X for motherboard audio?

kreechrr

Since my Razer ManO'War headset has broken (second pair to split, resulting in two separate ear pads) I'm looking to upgrade my "general use" headphones. Looking at a sub $100 pair. No need for a mic on them. Was thinking the ATH-M40X (that's $77 if I buy refurbished on Amazon).

My HiFi setup is a little more mid/treble focused (Schiit Modi 2 + Magni 2 w/ DT 990 600Ohms) so I like my general use headset to have better bass response, but not overpowering like most gaming branded headsets.

Also, if the DT 880's have better bass response than the DT 990's, I might eventually add the 880's to get good frequency coverage, while maintaining the higher fidelity sound I really enjoy from my current "HiFi" setup. My concern with the DT 880's is losing some mid/high response to make up for the better low response, in which case I might opt for a pair of DT 770's (which I hear are better low that the more "general" 880's).

I'm not sure if I understood correctly, as it seems you intended to ask a question... The body of your message is meant to elaborate upon the question. All I have to respond to is this:

Audio Technica ATH-M40X for motherboard audio?

Again, the question is incomplete and I'm not sure I understand it, but... yes! I have those headphones. They're the best I've had for under $200. If you can get a pair for under $100, I strongly recommend them!

... and if I understand correctly, then the answer to your question is: yes, they'll run perfectly fine plugged into the headphone jack of your mainboard, or your phone, or your iPod, or whatnot.

Regarding 600Ohms, I'm just passionate about listening to music. If the headphones make my Pink Floyd sound cool, I'll use them, and so far those headphones are brilliant! They come with the spiral cable that has the larger jack, but I'm not sure if that denotes 600Ohm compatibility... I'd be tempted to consult the manual, first.

My bad. I was very distracted typing the original question. The ATH-M40X would be for motherboard audio with main use for gaming and music. Just wondering if they're good.

I have a separate dac and amp I use a different pair of headphones with.  Mostly for music listening and occasional production. They're for high definition audio but they are a little weak on the bass. I really like the sound clarity, but wish the bass in the second pair of headphones had just a little more punch. Just unsure what if the Beyerdynamic DT 880's are basically the Beyerdynamic DT 990's with slightly more bass without compromising mids/highs. This was more open to recommendations.

Thanks for reply despite my question not making sense!

For $77 you'll be fairly happy. You can get similar quality sound from the Sennheiser HD200 pro, but they're not as comfortable...
