Since the help on the forum was wonderful the last few times, I would like some opinions.

In basic this machine will be used as a storage unit for the VPS'. Basically, we are using seperate boxes for the actual Processing power & RAM. And we will be using a ILO (or similar way) as storage, which will be this machine. Mainly because that makes it easy to scale.

Requirements:

  • High core/thread count CPU, though 8 threads will probably be plenty, I'd rather have 8x 1.7 Ghz instead of 4x 3 Ghz (hyperthreaded)
  • Quite a few PCIe 4x or bigger slots for RAID cards and PCIe 10Gbit cards.
  • Rack case between 2U to 3U. (smaller obviously better)
  • Atleast 6 hotswappable bays (RAID 6 support MUST)
  • 6x 1TB SSDs
  • Dependable hardware

The budget is roughly between €2000 (~$2300) to €3000 (~$3500) excluding 10Gbit cards. But lower is always welcome.

It does not require high core performance, though it will benefit from a lot of threads due the many requests it probably will get. Power consumption is something to keep an eye on. We currently have 10A on 220v available. As looking right now ~6A is being used for the other machines. ECC is not needed.

I was thinking about something in the line of a E52609 v4 with a consumer X99 board.

Thank you for the reply, but the motherboard wont be sufficient. With only 2 16x slots I can only populate it with 1 RAID card and 1 10Gbit card. We will be using atleast 4 PCIe 4x slots.A 1x slot would heavily lower performance on either RAID or 10Gbit cards. And for the CPU the E5-2609 v4 feels like a better options due more threads. The rack enclosure seems only to support 3.5" bays, where the SSD's are 2.5"
