PCIE Slot?

AuraDesru

I just moved my parts from a fractal core 1000 to a thermaltake v21 today with a new DH-15 cooler. My mobo is a Z97M PLUS with two PCIE slots. One of them is PCIe 3.0/2.0 x16 (x16 mode, gray). The other one that is farthest from the cpu is a PCIe 2.0 x16 (x4 mode, black). I was wondering whether my SC 1070 would perform differently in either slot.

I wonder if the bottom slot still runs at PCIe 2.0 x4 bandwidth while the first slot is left empty.

GPUs cannot be used in PCIe x4 slots, only the 16x.

Its physically x16 but it has x4 speeds.  Works fine, no performance degredation.

Want to custom loop?  Ask me more if you are curious

Yeah, I just realized my mistake. I skimmed this thread a little too fast. Apologies.

Today was really jumpy in terms of starting up. Moving everything to a new case and installing the cooler/newpsu made me get some stupid errors.

I think I did start up the screen putting the gpu in the pcie2.0x4 slot. Then I started getting issues of the display not turning on. then I had to reinstall the DDR3 ram sticks and try again. The only reason I'm asking this is because I hear that the noctua are better horizontal with the heatsink facing the exhaust fans.

it will have some degradation

it's a 4x slot at PCIe gen 2 - that's a 2x at gen 3 -_-

Should I just keep it in the PCIE 3.0 slot?

I'm all about performance so if it gives me some extra frames. I'll take it:^)

CPU is around 35-40c and GPU is around 60-67C(Probably due to the fans being 3% due to auto mode) on idle.

Sure?  It takes like 10 minutes to undo so go for it.

This is more of a air cooling question..

Would I actually see a difference in terms of cooling performance by moving it horizontally?

I currently have two 120mm above the DH-15 and the 1070 running around 2000rpm.

yeah really

you fail to take into account that the 4x PCie gen 2 is about as a 2x gen 3; while your graphs only go 8x gen 2

@AuraDesru you should keep it in the top slot

but you can also test the differences for yourself

Like I said, takes a few minutes to change it, so some pc journalism and test it yourself.

Honestly my Bros 4690k runs at full load 35c stock on an NH d14 with only one fan, I doubt it matters.

I'll keep it in the top slot and raise the fan speeds. Trying to oc to 4.7 ghz

mate, wtf are you talking about?!

4x gen 3 is about 4GB/s in each direction

that equals a 8x gen 2 that's also 4GB/s each direction

while a 16x gen 2 is 8GB/s in each direction

get your facts straight

Oops, still counts.  Puget ran the titan on 2.0 X8 with no issues.
