I recently purchased a TP-Link RE580D wireless extender. Here's how I have everything configured:

 

Hitron CGN3ACSMR modem from ISP:

-wireless disabled

-DHCP enabled

-LAN IP 192.168.0.1

-subnet mask 255.255.255.0

 

Netgear R7000 router:

-set to get IP address dynamically

-set to get DNS address automatically

-2.4 GHz band enabled (20/40 MHz coexistence, auto channel)

-5 GHz band enabled (channel 153)

-smart connect enabled (router selects best band for each device, instead of having to connect to a particular band directly)

-DHCP enabled

-LAN IP 192.168.1.1

-subnet mask 255.255.255.0

-192.168.1.2 reserved for RE580D

 

TP-Link RE580D wireless extender:

-static IP of 192.168.1.2

-subnet mask 255.255.255.0

-default gateway 192.168.1.1

-same SSID and password as the router

-DHCP server off

 

There was a noticeable improvement based on speed tests and just general usage over the last few weeks. However, my dad just experienced the following issue on his phone:

 

-"No Internet connection" displayed in orange text

-wireless extender was showing that the phone was connected with an IP address of 192.168.1.13

-phone was showing an IP address of 169.254.1.80

 

From what I read, this means it couldn't contact the DHCP server (my router). So I decided to move closer to the router and, sure enough, his phone eventually connected.

 

Is there something that I configured incorrectly? Is there anything I can do to prevent this issue in the future?
