So my friend is looking to upgrade his PC in the next few months and I've been trying to price out a worthwhile upgrade as cheap as possible as he is a tight budget (up to £500 max). He currently has an fx 8350 with 8GB DDR3, 212 evo, gtx 960 and a 500 watt evga bronze PSU. His case is an aerocool 500. thanks :)

If he's happy with the performance and his CPU is fine, then get a used GTX 980.

Why watercooling? It's a 1600 and watercooling isn't worth it on that budget. Evo 212 is just fine

Hyper 212 Evo isnt that much better than the stock cooler

the Hyper 212 Evo is seen as the best bang for buck in the pc world. And thus I would strongly disagree.

Exactly, you want bang for buck in a lower budget build. Thought Linus had done a video on Air vs Water but can't find it :/ But ya, Evo 212 is an awesome cooler, and doesn't have the chance to leak, and easier to deal with.

That's provided its for gaming, OP didn't really state a use

OP's gonna want 3000mhz ram if indeed it is for gaming especially as they're only + £7. Also keep in mind if OP uses a B350 board, SLI is out the window (just a consideration)

The problem with this budget is that GPU's in this bracket are hell expensive (if available at the moment) due to mining crap. As @Zando Bob said, it would probably be wiser to look into a used card such as the 980 or if you can find one, an AMD Fury. So at this point there's two ways to go, build a new platform and stick with the GPU for a while, used 480's and 580's will flood the market soon enough once the mining craze dies down

CPU: AMD - Ryzen 5 1600 3.2GHz 6-Core Processor  (£186.00 @ Amazon UK)
Motherboard: MSI - B350M GAMING PRO Micro ATX AM4 Motherboard  (£75.97 @ Amazon UK)
Memory: Corsair - Vengeance LPX 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-3000 Memory  (£133.49 @ Amazon UK)
Total: £395.46

Or, stick with the CPU and look for a little more ram, a better GPU and an SSD such as:

Memory: Corsair - Vengeance LPX 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-2400 Memory  (£124.99 @ Amazon UK)
Storage: ADATA - Premier Pro SP600 256GB 2.5" Solid State Drive  (£109.59 @ Amazon UK)
Total: £234.58

It would be cheaper to match 8gb to your friends existing 8gb ram and the SSD. IF you do that I would suspect it would leave around £320 for a GPU, which is the issue as this is the 580/1060 bracket
