While it might work (probably, seeing as HP and Compaq used mATX cases around those times), cooling wouldn't be the best, not to mention limited expansion. There are only two hard drive bays (usually), and you are probably limited on GPU space, although I can't get to the inside of my HP case to see. You're going to be limited. Just get one of those cheap $30 cases and away you go!
