Hello so yesterday my GPU died randomly, but i dunno if its actually dead. I tried placing it in a diff PCIE slot, Resetting bios, upgating drivers but the fans still turn off after boot. When i UININSTALL the drivers for the GPU the fans stay on spinning, But the sec i install drivers it turns off. is my GPU Dead dead or is there a issue i'm missing.

What GPU are you using? Many GPUs nowadays automatically turn off the fans if the temps are low enough

Desktop: i7-6700K / Asus Z170 S / H100i V2 / LPX 2400Mhz 16GB / 960 EVO 250GB / 2x 860 EVO 500GB / RM750i  / NZXT H440 XB271H + Z22n Monitors

I have 2 rigs, one has an AMD GPU, the other an Nvidia GPU. The fans on both spin up on initial boot up, then stop, until I put them under load (like playing a game). The cooling properties are so good now, they don't kick in until they start getting hot. At idle, or once they cool off, they stop again. This is normal today. If your worried about it, put it under load to start generating heat, and see if they spin up.

Best Excuses:

#1(simple) "Well, I never liked that stupid thing anyway!"

#2(complex) "Obviously there was a flaw in the material, probably due to the inadvertent introduction of contaminants during the manufacturing process."

Do you mean you have no display? Or do you just mean the fans aren't spinning when your computer is just sitting at idle? Example: Mine aren't spinning right now, because they don't need to. My GPU isn't hot enough for them to be necessary. If I do something that causes the GPU to get hotter, they will start spinning. Once I stop, and the GPU cools off a little, they will stop again. At idle, they just aren't needed.

So if you hook your GPU to your monitor, you get nothing? Black screen?

yeah, the gpu is running till windows loads. No display at all. tried diff slots and enverything.

That sounds like your GPU indeed has a problem. How old is it? Still under warranty? If you can use the integrated graphics without a problem, that eliminates the cable, and monitor. It's possible it's the motherboard, but I've never had all of the pcie slots die at once, so I think it's your GPU.

Wait? You get a display using the GPU until you install the drivers? If that's the case, then yeah I would suspect the wrong driver, or something wrong with that particular driver. But if your not getting any output to your monitor from the GPU...ever...my guess is it's the GPU. How do the contacts look? You might try cleaning them. If it's still under warranty, I'd RMA it. Unless somebody else here has another way to troubleshoot it. I'm just going off of what I've dealt with in the past.

You could try cleaning the contacts. Reinstall it, and double check that it's seated properly, power connected properly, etc. If you have a voltage meter you could also make sure it's getting power, to eliminate the PSU as a potential problem. Or if you have another GPU you could install it and see if it works.

Well, good luck. I always keep a cheap spare for just such occasions, lol.

It may see it, and the fans may still run, but that doesn't mean it will output anything. That being said, you could try an earlier driver, or see if Windows has a driver for it. Just to make sure. But if it just quit before you messed with the drivers, I don't think that's the problem. And don't worry about the fans. Worry about not having a display. Possibly the PSU isn't providing enough power.

Now that I've had some sleep, I thought I would ask a couple more questions.

#1. As you were troubleshooting, like trying another PCIe slot, you were connecting the display back into the GPU? I know you were using the integrated graphics to get to your desktop, so you were plugging back In to your gpu each time ?  I've made simple mistakes like that before in my frenzy to figure out what's wrong.

#2. If your Power Supply has extra gpu outputs, for connecting multiple gpu's, you could try moving the gpu power cables to new output ports. Also if you have additional gpu power cables, I'd take that opportunity to replace them. I have had output port failures on PSU's before, where only one port died, and the rest worked fine. Just trying to eliminate all the possibilities before you spend any money. Just some additional steps I would try. Again, make sure you swap the display cable back to your gpu each time you test. If it still doesn't work, you can then plug back into the onboard graphics to get  to your desktop and shutdown properly.

Best of luck to you, I'll keep my fingers crossed.
