WD Reds, Seagate Ironwolf/Pro and pretty much any Enterprise class drive would also suit you.

I've personally used WD Red's and can vouch for them.  Not saying other drives out aren't just as good, but that's what I have experience with.

Unless you're going to setup a dedicated storage machine and take the time to figure out how to do raid correctly, I would recommend that instead of getting a bunch of drives and doing a complicated raid setup, you find a single hard drive big enough to store all your data, get two of them, and set them up in raid 1.  The price per gig goes down as the size of the hard drives goes up, so you'll save some money that way.  If you get drives designed for NAS use such as the WD Reds, they're better quality and tend to have less issues, and even if you do have any issues, Raid 1 gives you more flexibility, as you're not tied to a raid setup on a particular machine.

TL;DR

Find two new, big, high quality drives.

Hi Alex,

thanks for considering a Seagate drive for your storage needs!

This a question we've been seeing quite frequently lately and you should pick the drive(s) in regards to your projected usage behavior. That being said, much more important than the decision on the brand is to pick the right drive for the right purpose: there are roughly three main types of hard drives: Desktop & Gaming (current Seagate lineup: BarraCuda), NAS (current Seagate lineup: IronWolf), and Surveillance (current Seagate lineup: SkyHawk). They all connect in the same way, but were engineered with different uses in mind.

Since you did mention running the new drive(s) in a backup / server environment enterprise class drives will definitely be a great choice but analyzing your projected workload a bit further, a BarraCuda or BarraCuda Pro might be a great choice as well.

NAS drives (IronWolf and IronWolf Pro) are rated for 24x7 use and optimized for NAS enclosures and extra vibration protection, so they have a lot of firmware optimizations and extras and are rather recommended for a multiple drive settings with possible RAID arrays.

We hope that helps and whichever drive or brand you end up with - enjoy!

Wow Thanks!

I think I'll need a Ironwolf. We will most likely be running it 24/7. if not ill go with a Barracuda/
