I got a new router (https://www.asus.com/us/Networking/RTAC3200/)...

Now my router no longer bottlenecks the download speed, but the problem is that I have more ping spikes in online games or Discord.

My ping also increased by ~17 ms (to LoL) from my older, trash router.

I have quite a few security settings enabled, could it be those? What is the ideal settings to have to reduce ping spikes?

  • CPU = i7 5930k
  • Cooler = Corsair H100i
  • RAM = Dominator Platinum 32GB DDR4-2666
  • Storage = Samsung 850 Pro 1TB
  • GPU = EVGA GTX 1080ti FTW3
  • PSU = Corsair 750D
  • PSU = Corsair 1000W
  • Monitor = Asus PG278Q

If you are using wireless turn things like msdu aggregation and mpdu aggregation off.

I'm using ethernet.

Well... maybe try turning down the firewall stuff. Did you replace the old router or is this one behind it.

I replaced the old router. I'm going to try what you recommended and post the results tmrw. :)

17ms is a lot. Id expect it to be related to a high CPU usage in the router. Some QoS/Firewall/security config engaging, etc.

I had to turn off Flood protections in my crappy tplink router while using Torrents with a relatively fast downstream... that piece of trash detected the 4MB/s (MegaByte, not Megabit) UTP stream as a flood attempt and it would block the connection for a few minutes.
