I was just wondering if anyone knew what model of xeon is in the new iMac. The apple website as you know give a crap load of detailed information.

The 18-Core Xeon is probably an E5-2699v4. The new top of the line Xeon has 28 cores.

actually the 2699 is a 22 core. I played with the filters on the intel products page and found a list of possible cpus.

I am 99% sure its not gonna be one of those. Why? Apple is either gonna use the server/workstation equivalent of x99 (unlikely) or x299 (likely), and the Xeon E7 are meant for the quad socket systems.

Given that they are using 8-18 cores, which is in line with the new i7/i9 line, and the Xeon e5 16** line is typically in line with those and is meant for single socket systems I wouldn't be surprised if we see them using the latest version of those (v5 I suppose).

The e5 26** doesn't make sense to use given that those are dual socket, which wouldn't be useful at all given that the iMac Pro is a single socket system.

Xeon e5649@4.4 GHz on Asus Rampage II Extreme or Gigabyte x58a-OC (whatever I feel like to set up at a time) , 6x4 GB Kingston HyperX 1600, Gainward GTX 670 Phantom, Samsung 840 Evo 240 GB, BeQuiet L8 530W

My bad. I meant the 2699v3. The Mac Pro used an E5 26** processor even though it only had one socket. Besides Intel changed their naming scheme again! The new Xeons no longer are called E3, E5, or E7.

Doesn't really matter LOL, it's going to thermal throttle to hell and back anyway when you try to do anything demanding.

possibly, but we don't know that yet and we won't know that until units are available in December-ish.

Unless it is watercooled, I honestly doubt that you could keep a 120W TDP processor and a potentially 150W TDP graphics card cool under load in one of those things.  It just doesn't look like it could really keep the internals running under full load without thermal throttling, and as we all know, Apple doesn't really place a priority on keeping their products cool..

If the fans run at 50,000 RPM, then it would be cool. The fact is you really can't say that it will throttle. There's a good chance it will, but it's not guaranteed nor can we say to what extent it will throttle.

I really can't say it will, correct.  I guess we will find out this December.

I just realised they never went with more than 8 cores for the 16** CPUs, so I suppose that is the reason why they used the dual-capable 26**. We'll see what they end up using through either leaks or in December.

For thermal throttling: while we have seen many Macs throttle before, the trashcan didn't, while many expected it to. Lets wait for the release and tests to say that if it does. The 2012 iMac had a 95W 3770 and a 100W 675mx in its top configuration, so maybe the new cooling setup can handle an additional 70W.
