Motherboard compatability

I'm doing my first pc build and i'm wondering if the z170-a by asus is compatable with Intel 7th gen processors or not.

On most boards, you'll have to have a 6th gen CPU first in order to update the bios to support kaby lake

if you shop at some regular brick and mortar stores and buy both from them, they usually will update the UEFI for you right in store if you are going to need firmware updates

Thanks, then i'll probably just buy a i5 6500 so i dont have to buy 2 cpus since i dont have one lying around. Or is it worth getting a 7th gen?

this is true. unless the board supports updating without a CPU or comes updated out of the box.

 

also depends where you buy. i know that the german store mindfactory.de offers bios updates before sending out the board.

6th vs 7th gen intel cpus are about the same. and since you are getting the z170 board no optane there so 7th gen is pointless. but that is my opinion.

Get a 6600k to be able to overclock your processor, Z170 can do that
