Headphone amp

Go to solution Solved by Skanky Sylveon,

The SONY STR-DA5000ES is meant for home theater use, and while it should work, it seems very much overkill for your headphones.  It should drive them just fine, Honestly decent on board audio can drive them just fine.  The STR-DA5000ES is pretty large though, so you might want to get a designated AMP/DAC.

Also note that I said that it SHOULD drive your headphones just fine.  Just because it drives speakers well doesn't mean that it will drive headphones well.

So I got a pair of Sennheiser HD650s and have been looking for an DAC/AMP to go with them. However, I did find that my dad does own a SONY STR-DA5000ES A/V Receiver from 2004 and was wondering if it would work well with my headphones through a optical/toslink cable.

Should I spend money to buy a separate AMP/DAC or just use my dads SONY STR-DA5000ES

I'm only concentrating on the sound quality and nothing else. I know that it has enough juice to really power the sound of my headphones already. I'm quite new to the audiophile community so I'm still not great at listening to what sounds 'good' and 'bad' even if it's subjective.

Here are the specs: https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16882105018

Thanks a lot...

Ok thanks a lot, I just hope it will at least improve the sound quality, even if it's just a bit.

If you don't have to pay for it, then there is no harm in trying it.  If that doesn't work, then a cheap amp is probably all you need, the Sennheiser HD650s is a lot easier to drive then many believe.
