I have a toshiba usb 3.0 1tb portible hdd i hold my steam games on so i can plug and play where ever i go. Just recently my games haven't been loading and it wont let me copy from it. It gives me "file cannot be read from source." So first thing i do is I try another port, then another computer. Then i go to my computer, right-click my hdd, properties, and tools to scan the hdd. It didn't come back with anything so i try chkdsk /f, nuthin. Chkdsk /r, freezes, I have to close cmd. I figure maybe i should just format it. I try a full format, fails, but a qick format works so eh try again?. This time i try chkdsk /f /r and it went really slow so i cancel and do a full format and it works. I do back with /f /r and it ran super slow after about 250gbs scanned and even though it was scanning the time would shoot up every 15 minutes or so. so I need some advice guys. i'm at a loss. thanx.

Have you tried using the HDD on a different computer?

If it works just fine there, there could be an issue with your USB port or the drivers.  In that case uninstalling and re-installing the USB drivers might do the trick.

If it still is as slow and unreliable on another PC, there's a problem with the HDD itself.  Then replacing will most likely be your only option.

Judging by the fact that it doesn't want to do a full format and that checkdisk starts to run real slow after 250GB, my gut feeling tells me that the HDD itself is damaged.

Ive tried all the above but it doesnt bring up errors when scanned unless u know of a software better than cmd.

ok but does it repair i see that it monitors but idk what id be looking for atm

crystaldiskinfo shows SMART data in an easy to read manner and color-codes your drives based on their condition

drives with no detected errors are marked green or blue but if you have a drive that is yellow or red you should not trust it any longer

look for warnings about bad sectors and pending sectors - if you got like 243 bad sectors and 163 pending or something like that it usually means your drive is damaged.

crystaldiskinfo does only show you the condition of your drive but not repair anything because there is no way to repair a physically damaged harddrive.
