My question is: Is the laptop Samsung np300e5x-a02bg compatible with i5-2540M?

I think the CPU is soldered to the main board so you can't really change it...

It's not, I recently changed the B960 to B980.

Nevermind. I found the cpu and the socket type is FCPGA988 and the socket type for the i5 is supported for FCBGA1023 and PPGA988 so i don't think it will work.

Nope. It works. With the HM65 chipset you need to use Sandy Bridge i3/i5/i7. I'd say keep with the 35W TDP that you have - but the i5 will work fine. Same socket - it's Intel G2.
