Ryzen 5 1400 or Intel i5 7500?

Hello all,

Hate to start a new thread, but since my old thread got kind of derailed...

I am building a new system, primarily for gaming, but also for some CAD and rendering work.

Budget constraints have led me to have to choose between the i5 7500 vs Ryzen 5 1400. Which would you get between those?

Things that are currently making me worried about the AMD build are:

  • Ryzen is very memory speed dependent, YET the motherboards dont support all kits. I don't want to spend a fortune on memory and fool around with memory clocks.
  • The single core performance of the i5 7500 should be better than the 1400? Or does an OC 1400 beat a 7500?
  • Overclocking performance might be better with R5 1400, but there is no guarantee that you will get a decent overclock? (plus, I'm not entirely too keen on running an overclock 24/7).

Things that I like the AMD build more for:

  • More threads, so possibly better performance going forward
  • AM4 should be around for a while, Intel might retire the LGA1151 socket soon.

Thanks guys!

Probably 1400 judging by your workload.

Make sure to quote me or tag me when responding to me, or I might not know you replied! Examples:

Buy whatever product is best for you, not what product is "best" for the market.

Interested in computer architecture? Still in middle or high school? P.M. me!

I love computer hardware and feel free to ask me anything about that (or phones). I especially like SSDs. But please do not ask me anything about Networking, programming, command line stuff, or any relatively hard software stuff. I know next to nothing about that.

@maartendc

Do you want a car that only drives the speed limit or 1 that can exceed it?

Locked processors are a bad buy compared to unlocked ones with similar IPC at the same price point.

Overclocked R5 > locked i5 and R5's have 2-3x the threads an i5 does.
