Do you want to create a Hosting company or just make yourself a server

So what servers are you running then if you want to create a hosting company?

learn a lot about:

- Networking for Windows & Unix

- Hypervisor (virtualisation) and vLANs

- Firewall management (and security in general)

- Customised ISO's for management configuration & management accounts

- Scripting to automate some of your processes

 

One of our companies is a cloud hosting company, the technology behind all the web panels for the actual virtual machines, is VMware. 

 

The hosting game is about having a broad knowledge of networking, infrastructure, operating system, security and development. Take the latest Ransomware attack, you'll need to know which of your customers have actually installed the needed KB updates so you can proactively acknowledge customers if they need to update, and also patching your own network endpoints to mitigate the IP ranges used.

What do you mean by A VPS, as in a single virtual machine? Why make it a virtual machine at all if you only need one?

If you want to virtualise a server to have multiple virtual machines, theres plenty of info on here about it or on google. You could use ESXi (free), Hyper-V, KVM, Virtualbox, etc...

I know what you mean, but you arent making sense what you want.

VPS = Virtual Private Server....it just means a server, that runs on a hypervisor.

 

If you're just making a Minecraft server, you don't need to virtualise the OS - you can just install Linux or Windows and install your minecraft server.

If you do want to virtualise it, then it depends on your hardware and what you're going to be running on which Hypervisor you want to use e.g ESXi, Hyper-V, Virtualbox, KVM/unRAID, etc....

Yep! I want to make a Minecraft server but i want it run 24/24 hours. That's my problem.

Just install VMWare ESXi on a PC and install some linux/windows OS inside it.

 

However, if you only want to run minecraft and any other personal use services, i highly recommend you just install debian on it and install the required applications rather than adding another overhead.

Install Linux or Windows on a dedicated server , install minecraft, leave server on. You don't need any special programs to do that. You only need to virtualize if you're doing lots of functions or need multiple operating systems. 

 

You especially don't need something like whonnock.

so if youre using ESXi - next you want to upload the installer .iso for the Operating System you want to install to your Datastore. 

Then create a virtual machine, specifying the CPU cores, memory, network and disk space you want assigned to your Virtual Machine, and mount the .ISO to the virtual cdrom drive. Once the VM is created then power it up and you should be ready to install.
