Contrast Ratio

Th0r33

I dont understand when a manufacturer will put something like DCR 5,000,000:1 (1000:1). Is the 1000:1 the actual contrast ratio? Why would they put the DCR 5,000,000 before it? Is it something that makes the contrast look better? Can someone please explain this to me?

weird that the second half of your post is invisible for dark theme users

DCR is dynamic contrast ratio. basically the display predicts the contrast content and tries to artificially raise contrast. it's up to you whether it looks good or not, but ordinarily DCR should be avoided. but yes, it is mostly marketing jargon when manufacturers quote such numbers. the static contrast ratio is what you ought to look at, but even then manufacturers inflate their numbers. in the end you have to look for reviews that test contrast via spectracal or something.
