Steam on XP

I got an old Pentium III 700 MHz laptop from my grandfather and I wanted to play Half Life I on it. I copied over the game files from my desktop PC onto a USB drive. I plugged it in remembering it wouldn't work unless I installed steam. I copied a steam setup file onto the stick and copied it on the desktop. I started it and installed steam perfectly. I went to boot steam and it downloaded the updates and blue screened the poor Compaq. Anyone know a way around?

Steam needs at least a 1000 MHz processor...

What was the BSOD error code?

 

Also to those going "but Steam requires...", requirements are only a suggestion. Unless it actually needs a specific hardware feature.

Oh fun, this looks like a generic error but the gist of it is one of the kernel's processes died. It may not be caused by Steam itself. Do you have any other applications that appear to touch the system all the time like an antivirus program or something?

According to Microsoft that error code means there is a HDD problem or windows is corrupted...

I highly doubt HDD problems, steam probably fried windows or windows was already screwed up and steam was trying to access something that was corrupted?

im wondering if steam still supports XP. One way around would be to install linux as the steam client on linux is 32bit and linux is not outdated or unsupported.

Did you try simply downloading Half Life through steam, not with copied files? Copying files never worked for me, it didn't BSOD but Steam didn't recognize it unless you move it with it's own function of moving games from different SteamLibrarys.

And yeah, you could try ubuntu

Okay... I got Steam working on this thing. I had to set the resolution to 640x480 and I also had to turn off the GUI but I'm installing HL1 right now.
