2 ssd's?

Hey guys,

 

I am struggling with the following decision; I have an Asus Maximus VIII Ranger motherboard with 2 HDD's and a HyperX 240GB SSD. A few days ago i bought myself a Samsung M.2 960 EVO 250GB as booting ssd. 

 

It looks really good although i am now thinking about returning it, selling my hyperX ssd and get a M.2 960 EVO 500GB.  Another choice would be; use this 250 EVO drive and sell my hyperX ssd to get a Samsung EVO 850 500GB instead. In that case i would have a m.2 for booting and a separate ssd for space.

 

I am not sure what  the right decision would be here. Could you guys help me to decide?   Thanks in advance

The 960 evolution should be NVME, which I believe is faster. If you don't need the extra storage then get it. Though the M.2 960 EVO + SATA 850 EVO makes more sense $$$ wise, and probably won't have any noticeable difference in performance. Just get whichever one you want, as there isn't any right or wrong choice in this situation. Though with a small boot drive and an SSD for mass storage, all you storage will be fast, vs a larger boot drive and an HDD. But you'll only really notice it if you have a bunch of stuff.

i know, but i dont think im going to buy the 500GB one without selling my HyperX ssd. So i either get the 960 EVO 500GB and sell my current hyperX ssd. Or i keep my hyperx as reserve storage and use the 960 EVO 250GB for booting. Or i use this 960 EVO 250GB, sell my hyperX and buy another 850 EVO 500GB

Get 850 EVO in addition, cheaper and the real life speed difference isn't very big.

I wouldn't really worry too much about having NVMe for a boot drive. NVMe kills SATA/AHCI in terms of sequential read/writes but is more or less the same for random read/writes which is what everyday use and boot drives use, so it won't affect performance much other than transfers and other tasks benefiting from sequential read/writes.

I'd keep the 960 EVO and sell the HyperX and get 850 EVO.

I don't think, for me, the benefit from the higher end SSD's are worth the premium cost. I would say go the route that saves you more money since it sounds like you'll be happy with either set up you might go with.
