RX480 BLACKSCREEN HELP! PLEASE!

Go to solution Solved by Liquid_Cool_It,

HAHA i think ive solved it after god knows how much stressing, messing and running around trying to find my weak link, Long story short: I had a hunch that my Motherboard was holding things back as its Hyper transit Speed is only 1000mhz/ 5x200mhz, so i Underclocked my GPU to 998mhz/ ghz whichever it is so that was just under hyper-clock  and ive had a succesfuly had a 3 hour run on crisis 3 and a successful run on Need for speed (2016) for 2 hours...........i can't be 100% and i will more than likely regret saying this, but i think its solved...............maybe the load was heating up my chipset too much so that it performed a software cut off or pure and simply couldn't handle it so stopped it..............i may never know, but looks like new motherboard to be ordered lol, THANK THE LORD THAT IS OVER! for now.................

Hi everyone, normally I'm a problem solver but this one has had me scratching me head for days turning in to weeks now, I purchase an RX480 Dual oc from an online retailer based in bolton UK and who happen to supply Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II with High-end parts ;D and have never had issues before, however since I installed it I have had what I call………..

MY VERY IRRITATING ISSUE THAT WILL BE THE END OF MY SANITY

in Games such as Crisis 3, Unravel, battlefield 4, need for speed (2016), Sainta Row 2 & Assassins Creed 4: black flag, after 5mins up to 1.5hrs game play the Image freezes 1-5 seconds then Black screens 5-10 seconds then Desktop is shown but mouse remains locked in program, once task manager is accessed and manual termination of process's for Origin and/ or just the game in question is complete, I can run anything again (sometimes Radeon settings locks up too resetting my settings.…Grrr!) I must add that Assassins Creed Ran fine at low specs on my GeForce GT710 very rarely crashing but had buggy graphics hence the upgrade.

I have tried

  • Display driver uninstall from safe mode and re-install of latest recommended drivers-

  • repeated for latest optional drivers

  • Origin uninstall and re-install of latest recommended version-(didnt bother with steam as was last thing to install.

  • repeated for latest Beta version

  • Individual Game uninstalls and re-installs

  • Game updates

  • Repair or uninstall & re-install of ALL applicable c++ redistributions

  • Net framwork 4 uninstall and re-install of net framework 4.5

  • Stress testing of CPU 3hrs 40

  • Benchmark of GPU 3hrs 40

  • Windows Ram check 2pass extended

  • Speed test of Hard drive 49mb’s / around 2.6-.29gb’m

  • Uninstall of unnecessary programmes

  • Disk clean up

  • Disk defragmentation

  • No temp issues (highest GPU is 73c and highest CPU is 62c aircooled)

  • BIOS updated from 1.20 to 1.30

  • Swapped Ram for 2x 1GB hynix (HP) RAM- Crisis 3 was running bjt still crashed within 15 minutes

  • Underclocked GPU to 1175 clock to test motherboard theory, still crashed but longest crisis 3 run at 1 hour 15mins.

  • Underclocked CPU to 2.0 to test motherboard theory but still crashed

  • Have ordered thermal paste to try Athlon II x2 CPU I have to hand which was purchased 2-3 years ago rather 6-9 years ago.

  • Going to try underclocking GPU down to 1000 this morning but cant lower memory clock below 2000 for some reason.....

  • Will be checking PSU using jumper and multi-tester if no luck by end of today

Motherboard: Asrock N68-GS4 FX this is my main suspect as Hyper transit is only 1000mhz….updated bios to 1.30 due to LAN issues (fixed) 2 years old

CPU: Phenom II x4 810 2.6ghz (NOT Overclocked, Stress tested 3hrs 40 mins using P95 4 thread heat test) - is 7-9 years old however have read CPU's have been pointless to upgrade until last 2 years and is still not neccesary.

RAM: 2x 4gb corsair vengeance, passive cooled 1600hz (NOT overclocked and a 2 pass Extended windows test said no issues)

GPU: RX480 Dual OC 8GB, (NOT overclocked by myself but running at 1305mhz clock and 2000mhz mem, WATTMAN settings were initialy untouched and stress tested using Unigine Valley for 3hrs 40mins) less than month old

Hard drive: Western digital 160gb SATA 3.5 inch (chkdsk checked and any errors repaired & sfc/ scannow checked and repaired, actual read/write is 49mbs/49mbs) 6months-1year old

PSU: 600BQ EVGA Semi-modular Bronze (less than month old)

Wifi card: Ralink (less than week old)

operating system is windows 7 ultimate 64bit with service pack 1 & security updates installed and countless C++redist’s

Has anyone, anywhere got an idea? PLLLLEEEAAASSEEEEEE :)

So your GT 710 runs fine with your current hardware? If so then it's a faulty 480. Looks like it's an ASUS. Just tell them it's faulty and RMA it, or replace it at the store you got it from if it's been 30 days or less.

would it not have failed while running Unigine Heaven or Valley though? i was able to drop in and run around pushing the frame rate as low as possible (33fps) in the most intense areas but did not crash, RMA is tempting though just to be certain, if i then still have the issue i think im going to consider Mobo upgrade to the ASROCK 970M pro3 m-atx.....

i didn't find an option for Gen 1 pcie in bios, however i did find a latency timer for it instead ranging from 32 - 248 i assume they are bits, so as im running 64 i set it to 64,but it doesnt work either, system is stable though so ill leave it for now, I also should add that sound continues all the way until ctrl+alt+del........
