Hello!

I had a pretty dodgy setup- it was my PC I took over from the UK to Australia in my suitcase in bits. I put it together in a prototyping kit not a proper case.

I reached a point where I was too nervous that I would accidentally spill something in the open case and it was getting very dusty!

Rather than buying a case I decided to embark on the journey of building my own case! (Well modding one)

Processor: i5 4670k

Motherboard: Gigabyte Z97 HD3

RAM: 16GB Corsair Vengeance RAM

GPU: MSI Nvidia GTX 970

CPU cooling: Corsair water cooling 240mm Rad.

Storage: 500GB Harddrive + 3x SSD

PSU: 650w Corsair

Case: custom build

This is my case pre build- it was super dusty and just very ghetto-

So initially I bought 6 second hand cases from ebay for $6. It turned out 5 of the 6 were wrecked- all rusted and just so outdated! So I threw them away. But one was an old Coolermaster case- a bit worn and old but I decided to use it as my base.

I stripped down the case removing the black panelling leaving the metal base.

Stripped down the case entirely and began to sand down the metal ready for a fresh coat of paint.

I didn't need the hard-drive cage in there anymore; as it was an older case the hard-drive cage was riveted into the case. I had to drill out the rivets so I could remove the cage, drilling out rivets is surprisingly difficult but with perseverance comes results!

Painting: Started with a silver basecoat

Then I gave the case a fresh coat of black paint- ran into issues with the paint dripping down the case and layers of old paint sticking to the top of the case. Almost ran out of paint but got it done!

My radiator was too dusty! Spent a while cleaning all the old parts!

Started putting together the pieces into the case- not worrying about cable management so I could check it all works fine and I haven't broken anything!

Got this huge heatsink from china which I stuck on my GPU as a backplate with some thermal pads

Got some custom plexiglass panels cut for the side panels and interior of the case.

Once I was sure all the panels fit properly I tested the case worked.

Everything worked perfectly so I put in all the panels and the build was done! The panels are attached with little velcro tabs- you can't see them, they are a cheap option and they are very strong holding the panels in place!

So the case is completed! I think it is a big improvement from the start- it roughly took maybe 6-8 hours of work. Cost wise was about $150AUD in materials.

Pros-

-As it is a custom build I could make a custom basement and have all the panels the exact sizes I wanted

-Was enjoyable to build

-easy to remove panels and inner plexi sections

-Scratch resistant and tough

Cons-

-Plexi collects dust like a magnet

-For the cost you can buy a cheap case instead

-Time element of having to complete the work.

Tell me what you think!
