would it be better to sli 2 980tis than get a single gtx 1080 (probably a blower model if i can find a cheap enough one)? many thanks

Yes, should be more powerful. Are 980 tis that cheap for you? Or are 1080s just expensive.

the 980tis are £240 a peice, id have to pretty much get the bargain bucket 1080 tho

My suggestion would be to go with a single 1080.  When I ditched my 980TI sli for my 1080 Classified, I didn't see a huge performance difference.  There was some, but not in the sense that would be inclined to think.  Also, any sli issues were gone.  Games ran smoother on one card.

Get a 1080, it draws less power, it is newer, so you will get better driver support and it has better performance in DX12 ;)

Why bother upgrading the GPU if you're doing 1080p 60 hz and already have a 980? :D
