I haven't rooted my Lumia but I have rooted my Xperia.

Anyway, the idea is the same: rooting allows you to access settings that aren't available to you without the root such as overclocking or inputting commands via a terminal emulator.

Generally, you should only do it if you actually need to do it. If you need to do advanced l33t stuff with your phone, rooting is the way to go. If you don't, it's pointless.

Also, keep in mind that the process of rooting could potentially brick your phone and would definitely void any warranties you might have on that thing (although I doubt you still do unless you bought out an extension).
