Hello LinusTechTips community,

Im studying audio and visual arts and just ordered a macbook pro cause my last one is over 5 years old. It's the 256 GB version. Now i know that i will need more space than that and i'd like to know what my options here are. I heard about people using SSD's as external hard drives. I will store my photographs/videos on it mainly. My price limit is 200 euros. Thanks alot!

How much space do you need?

If you're thinking of using an SSD as an external drive, for 200EUR you probably will not get more than 256GB extra (512GB will be hard even with the holiday season in). I'm not too sure if the speed benefit is worth it, if there is any.

If you need more space than that, you're better off getting a USB 3.0 compatible HDD. Up to 2TB on a single drive wouldn't be a problem, and you could get two of those if you really need to on that budget.

Desktop: Intel Core i7-5820K, Corsair H115i, Asus X99-Deluxe/USB 3.1, G.Skill Ripjaws4 32GB 2800MHz CL16, Zotac RTX 3070, Samsung 950 Pro 512GB in Angelbird Wings PX1, Samsung 850 EVO 1TB, 5*Seagate 12TB, Cooler Master V1200, Phanteks Enthoo Luxe, Windows 10 Pro. You're probably right. In my case size>speed. Are there any usb 3.0 2TB drives you would recommend?

The one I linked (Western Digital My Passport) has been pretty good to me (I've had one 1TB and one 2TB version of it). But it doesn't really matter, get whatever is cheap from a brand you recognise (WD, Samsung, Seagate, Toshiba, iOmega, any others I may have forgotten).
