Hello!

I have been thinking buying a PS3 again, more specifically the Slim version. I found a decent deal online for 35 € with a controller, but without a charging cable or a HDD installed... I have a spare used 2.5" 7200 RPM 200 GB SATA3 Hitachi HDD from a HP laptop laying around and I thought that I could use it for the PS3. Is there anything that I would need to know? Would the HDD work with the PS3?

Thank you!

I think it should work here is a link on how to do it.

But 200 gb is a little low I would say.

I installed a HDD in my PS3 superslim 12GB Console, I only needed to install the hdd and it updated the firmware, but I don't know if the hdd equipped consoles have intergrated storage that the console copies the firmware off.

200GB is way to small

you also need a USB thumb drive with the (latest) PS3 firmware

200 GB is not low for a PS3 man, those games aren't that big. Plus you can't install disc games (at least the ones I have) like you would on 360/PS4/XBone.

I own a PS3 and I'm telling you 200GB is low, as far as I remember, my PS3 shipped with a 250GB

for disk based games, they won't dump that much on the drive; but what you're going to do when you start purchasing games / DLC from PS Store

Depends on how many games you need/want to install. My fat PS3 originally came with 60GB.

I don't know if the slim models work differently, but yes the HD does store part of the OS. It'll download an update when a new drive is fitted.

I have a 160 GB PS3 and I have bought like 10 games on the PS Store since getting it 3 months ago.

Also what's so hard about deleting games you're not playing if you're really low on space? This is the same forum that advocates 120 GB SSDs to people in their PC builds in the days of 60 GB game installs but when it comes to consoles it's 1TB or bust?

what?! I haven't anything about 1TB

I said 200GB is rather small

and I don't delete games, if I like to play some old game I won't have to wait 30min, sometimes longer for the game to install - MGS4 comes to mind
