Sounds like you, my friend, need a mini ITX H81 board and a G3258 for your new HTPC.

I enjoy buying junk and sinking more money than it's worth into it to make it less junk.

Why H81 and not H61

Because H61 doesn't work with the Pentium G3258. If you have an H61 board already, your best bet is either the old reliable i5-2400 or i3-21X0, depending on budget.

just looked on Ebay h61 itx costs more than h81 itx

In that case, I'd definitely be looking at H81. The G3258 is a fun little toy and can be overclocked to ~4.2GHz on any board with the stock cooler. If you want four threads, the i3-4XXX CPUs are great little budget CPUs, but you lose the ability to overclock.

Okay thanks but what about the case?

(I'm not good with case manufacturing)

The cube form factor is reasonably common amongst HTPCs. Cooler Master, Fractal and Thermaltake all make cases in that shape and size. I believe other low-cost brands like Apevia and DIYPC do as well. You've got a wide range to choose from there. I've used Cooler Master's CM Elite 110 and am currently using Thermaltake's Core V1. Both are solid cases. The Elite 110 is a pain in the ass to build in, but it fits almost anywhere that you can squeeze a toaster. The Core V1 is big by ITX standards, but it's got great airflow, is easy to build in and looks great.
