A lot of times you can't use the same memory, and the power supply, especially from a pre-built would be questionable. And the cases from pre-built systems from that time were often non standard, especially with front-panel I/O connections.

Main System: Phobos

AMD Ryzen 7 2700 (8C/16T), ASRock B450 Steel Legend, 16GB G.SKILL Aegis DDR4 3000MHz, AMD Radeon RX 570 4GB (XFX), 960GB Crucial M500, 2TB Seagate BarraCuda, Windows 10 Pro for Workstations/macOS Catalina

Secondary System: York

Intel Core i7-2600 (4C/8T), ASUS P8Z68-V/GEN3, 16GB GEIL Enhance Corsa DDR3 1600MHz, Zotac GeForce GTX 550 Ti 1GB, 240GB ADATA Ultimate SU650, Windows 10 Pro for Workstations

Older File Server: Yet to be named

Intel Pentium 4 HT (1C/2T), Intel D865GBF, 3GB DDR 400MHz, ATI Radeon HD 4650 1GB (HIS), 80GB WD Caviar, 320GB Hitachi Deskstar, Windows XP Pro SP3, Windows Server 2003 R2

I'd re-purpose the old machine some how if it still works and just purchase new. You could, use it as a secondary PC for kids or others in your home, give it to your grandma, or setup a NAS/Media server box.

If re-purposing it is out of the question due to hardware failure or something, you could easily salvage these parts if its a custom built pc:

  • case - ATX in 2008 is still ATX today
  • dvd drive - if it works why buy another
  • hdd - use it as a secondary drive for file backups in your new rig
  • misc cables and wires - SATA cables or molex power adapters if needed in your new rig
  • any left over parts you could try selling on Craigslist or something. Just don't be that guy asking too much for used stuff

If you do anything, definitely do not reuse the old power supply in a new machine with new hardware. That is a recipe for killing your nice new parts prematurely.
