I have a i7-4720HQ 2.6GHz (x8 core) processor with 16Gb DDR3 RAM and 1TB SSDH (wd black) I'm having issues with low performance, long boot time and over all processing. The desktop is even laggy sometimes. So does changing the allotted number of cores would help me in anyway? Also, I have my memory usage and CPU usage is really high sometimes, for no reason at all and due to which my system is constantly revving for no reason. I've seen many systems (lower than mine) performing better than what I have

The 4720HQ is a mobile-tier chip. According to that I assume you use some sort of slightly older gaming laptop.

1. Update all of your drivers.

2. Update your BIOS.

3. Check your system and registry with CCleaner and uninstall any random or unwanted software you might have installed. Look up if any of your software or drivers is notorious for causing trouble. If so, install a different or fixed version or uninstall.

3. Run a stress test (preferably Aida64 or Intel Extreme Tuning Utility).

4. If your temps are insanely high, replace the thermal paste on your cpu and gpu.

5. If you still have seemingly random system load, do a fresh install of your operating system.

Yes its an old gaming laptop, Y50-70. Is there a direct way by which I can update all my drivers one by one at once? I can't do 4) if I have a laptop right? Would changing my no of cores help? Would upgrading to a SDD help or Upgrading to DDR4 RAM? Too many questions?

It sounds an awful lot like you've got resources being hogged by background tasks and/or unwanted software. Your best bet is to get hunting in task manager and to start looking for any culprits there.

You cannot upgrade to DDR4. DDR3 and DDR4 are completely different. Upgrading to an SSD would help, but it will not bring your usage back in line unless you figure out what is hogging your resources.
