Headphones or Headset

Im wondering what would sound better: Headphones such as Sennheiser HD 558s without a soundcard and an external mic or a USB Headset such as the Corsair Vengeance 1500. I would be using them for VoIP and listening to music. My budget is about £120 ($190). Thanks!

Probably the 558s with an external microphone. I was actually thinking of getting the 558s during the holidays to see if they would go down cheaper.

You don't need a sound card, 558's are fine. Never get a headset.

Headphones often have the best audio quality since they are not "gaming". You can't really compare a good pair of headphone to a USB headset. If you want the best audio, go with some headphones (like the sennheiser) and maybe a soundcard if you really want to.

love my DT990's. bassy and showcases dem high hats and crashes well too, love them for foo fighters!

558s are much better, but if you are running them straight from onboard audio they might be too quiet. You might need to get an amp or a soundcard with a built-in amp. It depends on what motherboard you have though.

Just get the headphones, unreal sound quality when compared to a headset.

OK thanks I'll get the 558s. Any recommendations for an external mic? I've been looking at the Zalman ZM-MIC1 but not sure about the clip seen some bad reviews on it.

It's a cheap mic that works. 

The Blue Snowflake is better, but since it sits on your desk it's best for PTT situations.
