I have a Dell XPS L501x that someone else uses and the battery is shot (it lasts about ten minutes on a full charge). As a result, the red battery warning light is always flashing (even when the battery is at 100%) and there is a bios error beep followed by a message: "f1 to continue, f2 for setup, f12 for boot menu". I've been trying to figure out if there's anyway to prevent that boot error because a lot of times the laptop is left closed and then windows decides to turn itself on to update resulting in the laptop just sitting on and closed for hours at a time, which causes it to get loud and hot; plus it's just annoying. If I remove the battery, then the problem goes away, but I'd rather not remove the battery since it gives some leeway in case the charger gets disconnected; and I'd rather not buy a new battery because it never gets used as a laptop anyway. I've tried playing around in the bios and googling for answers, but I've yet to come up with something that will solve the problem.

TL;DR I have an old Dell laptop with a dead battery that's causing a bios error. Is there any way to fix it?

It's a check built into the BIOS so, no, your probably can't change it if there's no option in the BIOS to turn it off.

I'm not sure why you wouldn't get a cheap generic battery, if this is a system you use daily... They don't cost much, but anyways..

You say the laptop turns itself on to update? I've never heard of that, doesn't seem right.

You could at least set your system to power down after a long period of inactivity to stop the heat and noise problem when you're not using it.

Does you mum know you're here?

The computer just sits on a desk plugged into the charger 24/7, so a new battery would be just to silence the error message -- not something that's really worth spending $20~ on, especially considering the laptop is old.

It won't power up from a complete shut down, but it will from anything else (and is something I've had on multiple computers).

The system gets stuck in a pre-post state, so I don't think there is any way to put a timeout on how long the system stays up for.
