Hey!

So I have been out of the PC enthusiast building community for a little while and am just coming back into things, so I could use some tips.

I have my old gaming PC that I built years ago when I was really into gaming, but I am not into that anymore. I am getting into development, marketing, etc. learning the ropes of design and coding.

What I want to do:

  • downsize my PC to something more suitable to my apartment (getting married and moving out of my house)
  • upgrade CPU, MOBO, GPU, RAM, storage

What I use my desktop for:

  • I will most likely overclock
  • I do a lot of multitasking on my PC
  • I sometimes run a couple heavy programs at once (autoCAD, Maya) and I would like a computer capable of handling anything I throw at it during my workflow
  • Most of the time I'm running programs like Word, Excel, browsers (usually at least 5 pages open), Photoshop
  • Sometimes running multiple IDE's and executing programs simultaneously

Advice I'm looking for:

  • CPU
    • I am thinking an i7 6700k but will this be too much? Should I opt for a cheaper AMD chip with more cores? Should I burn a hole in my wallet for Ryzen?
  • MOBO
    • obviously completely dependent on CPU but please suggest one with whatever chip you recommend
    • Micro-ATX or smaller
  • RAM
    • I'm thinking 16GB so I won't have to upgrade for a while
    • I like the Corsair Dominator series, but am very open to suggestions
  • GPU
    • I'll be running multiple displays at 1080p, possibly upgrading to 2560x1440 or 4K monitors
    • I do run some graphics intense programs like Maya from time-to-time, and occasional gaming
    • I'm thinking GTX 1060, maybe 1070
  • storage
    • here I'm just looking for suggestions because this will also be the main storage center for all of our family's documents, media, etc.
    • I may just hold off and build a small NAS in a year

Also keeping in mind that I am paying for a wedding this year and don't print my own money, what suggestions can you come up with?

Cheers!

Go for Ryzen, as Ryzen clearly beats intel in multitasking and rendering stuffs.

Go for X370 Mobo,

GPU is fine

Go for some M.2 SSD, as they'll help really a lot in your type of work, it'll make hell of a difference.

What's your budget and where do you live?

Waterloo Region, Southern Ontario. Budget is pretty flexible as I will just wait as long as I need to in order to purchase the best equipment for my needs.
