Does RX 480 support HDR?

Go to solution Solved by zMeul,

it's perfectly normal for HDR TVs to use 4:2:2 or 4:2:0 chroma subsampling over HDMI

HDMI2.0 does not have the same bandwidth available to it as DP has

I'm planning on getting a LG B6 but I've been reading conflicting reports on Polaris GPU's only supporting 10 bit over DisplayPort, not HDMI which is obviously what TV's use.

Here's my reference article: https://www.techpowerup.com/227941/amd-radeon-gpus-limit-hdr-color-depth-to-8bpc-over-hdmi-2-0

Can anyone confirm this? My driver version is 17.2.1 and my card is the XFX RX 480 RS.

HDMI 2.0 only has enough bandwidth for 8 bpc color depth at 4K 60 Hz with RGB or YCbCr 4:4:4 color. HDR requires color depth of 10 bpc or more. So no, HDMI 2.0 does not support HDR at 4K with RGB/YCbCr 4:4:4 color, this will be true on any HDMI 2.0 graphics card.

It should support 10 bpc color depth and HDR at lower resolutions, or at 4K with chroma subsampling enabled (4:2:2 or 4:2:0).

Is there any discernible difference with chroma subsamping at 4:2:2?

Depends on content; with text yes, but for movies games, it will be difficult to tell.
