RedHat 5, Kernel panic - not syncing: Fatal Exception

I'm taking a unix course in school and trying to setup a RHEL 5 virtual machine using VirtualBox. It installed successfully, I got into the desktop GUI and I went to install guest additions for the machine. It seemed to be working, said it needed to reboot, and when it did I started getting a Kernel panic - not syncing: Fatal exception message, then it reboots itself and keeps looping till that message.

I'd like to understand what caused the problem, and if I can, how to fix it. My knowledge of linux is fairly limited at the moment, thanks.

Edit: Someone suggested I try this, but it did not work:

Go to your virtual machine -> Settings -> System
Then change Chipset from PIIX3 to ICH9 and enable "Enable IO APIC"
After that, your virtual machine will boot without any issue.
