A friend of mine has  left over mobo that he is willing to hook me up with.  Its a asus z170-e board that I am thinking of slapping an i7 on to build a rig.  I am wondering, however, if it would be better to get the 6700k or 7700k in this instace.  On amazon there is a 30 dollar difference, basically is the increase in performance even worth dealing with updating the bios and the 30 dollars?

As a follow up does that asus board allow flashing without a compatible cpu?

Almost guaranteed to hit 5GHz with good cooling.

No. As a rule of thumb, only very high end mobos have such feature.

With that in mind, get the 6700k. It's cheaper, you won't have to worry about BIOS, it's still just as powerful, doesn't require as much cooling... seems like the perfect choice for you.

no the 7700k. the 6700k is a tough nut to crack at or past 4.7 or 4.8GHz from what i've seen. you either thermal out or voltage out. de-lidding is really the only solution to going super speed on these baddies.
