Don't know how he did it, but it seams to be hardware level as it also happens inside the BIOS.

Somehow my dad managed to switch the Keyboard Fn keys,so like instead of pressing 4 you are pressing the volume down and you have to press and hold the Fn key to actually type the 4, basically the keys that shoulde require holding the Fn button do the Fn response to normal presses and you have to hold the Fn button to get the normal expected response from the keyboard.

This is on a Toshiba laptop.

You might find a PADLOCK ICON ON ESCAPE KEY

I had to Fn+Escape to Escape out of the BIOS at one point, so I can say for certainty that won't fix it, the ESC key is a function key on that keyboard, i'll look and see if there is a Padlock icon on any of the other function keys when I get home. So the Padlock is what I'm looking for then?

Yes, the padlock thing is what will fix it, if not then you'll have to look into Toshiba support software pre-installed in the computer, or may even (rarely possible) find it in keyboard settings of windows itself.

Padlock was F1 and didn't do anything to fix it did nothing with Fn+F1 and F1 by itself just caused like the MS Word Help menu to popup when in word and launch Edge when I was at the desktop, I re-installed Windows on this machine last year and it doesn't have any of the Toshiba bloatware on it, I also updated the BIOS tonight and tried installing several toshiba apps, didn't have any luck there, don't see how it could be a Windows setting since it happens in the BIOS too. plugging in a USB keyboard that doesn't have those function keys works fine on that keyboard.

That means you need the Toshiba apps and bloatware, etc. Hit their support website see if you can find them. The problem is that there are no drivers or support software on your laptop to support the keyboard functionality .

but how could it be tripped into that more then 6 months after Windows being installed? this computer has been used daily since the reinstall and only just yesterday started doing this. I also last night installed the Function Key app (which had NOTHING to do with the actual function keys) and several other apps from the support page and still nothing, I installed all toshiba apps other then things like camera, video player and apps like that.

That's a bit concerning, any probability that your keyboard may have malfunctioned ??

Here is the solution I found on another website...

(0) Save all your open documents and stuff and close their respective programs

(1) Navigate to the following directory: C:\Program Files (x86)\Toshiba\System Setting

(2) Double-click on the "System Settings.exe"

(3) Scroll down in the left menu until you find "keyboard"

(4) Click on the "keyboard" menu option and change the default "special function mode" to "normal f1-f12"

(5) Click the "apply" button and allow your computer to restart.

All done!!
