I think I screwed the pooch by buying an R7 1700.

@Gene Starwind are you in the US? If you want to sell the CPU at a slight discount let me know before I order one on Newegg. ;)

I think you're being overly pessimistic. We have how many developers saying they're going to optimize for Ryzen? Enough of them are big names that I'm not at all worried. That said, I estimate between six months to a year for full performance.

no, pretty much only games.  Windows Scheduler is notoriously awful, and throws stuff around everywhere, and that causes the problem.  If all the cores are being fully utilized, then it doesn't do that.
