well i was looking for half life 1 and 2, quake 1,2,3 and stuff like that

For hl1 and the quake games I'd go for a P3 machine. But for hl2 you'll need a XP machine like Kenji said. As long as you're not trying to do DOS gaming, just go for a P4/Athlon XP/64.

i7 2600k @ 5GHz 1.49v - EVGA GTX 1070 ACX 3.0 - 16GB DDR3 2000MHz Corsair Vengence

Asus p8z77-v lk - 480GB Samsung 870 EVO w/ W10 LTSC - 2x1TB HDD storage - 240GB SATA SSD w/ W7 - EVGA 650w 80+G G2

3x 1080p 60hz Viewsonic LCDs, 1 glorious Dell CRT running at anywhere from 60hz to 120hz

Model M w/ Soarer's adapter - Logitch g502 - Audio-Techinca M20X - Cambridge SoundWorks speakers w/ woofer

half life 1 runs perfect on even the latest i7 systems - at least the steam version does.

same goes for quake - i had no problem playing quake 2, 3 and unreal on XP with a core 2 duo ... there are windows XP patches available for most games

so the XP machine might be what you are looking for

Windows ME can actually be pretty good for retro gaming if you "mod" it to run real DOS. I use it on my retro gaming rig and have no problems. But that's just preference, I'd recommend 98.

ok, its a choice between xp and 98 with different hardware. i found a slot 1 p3 for £10 but i still need a mobo

ok..

Never mind, now that I realize you're going for late 90's/early 2000s and trying to run HL2, definitely go for the P4 machine. Usually when I hear "retro" I think DOS, but nah, you'll be fine. All the Quake games run on basically anything lol.

i hear ya, tinkering with old hardware can be a lot of fun - i have a pentium 4 and a pentium 3 i want to get done

I think pentium 4 sounds good with xp, but any gpu reccomendations?

also should i go with the newer 775 p4s or the 478 ones for a similar price as the 775 one would allow for pcie gpus instead of agp

and you will still find a lot of coolers for 775 brand new. wich is a good thing since every used cooler i have had was noisy AF because the fan was old.

and like you said, there is also the benefit of PCIe wich you can find good cards for cheap.

good agp cards are getting more and more expensive

on that note, i have a 775 pentium 4 and a PCIe radeon HD 2600XT that i don't know what to do with it ... they are just sitting on a shelf doing nothing. i could send you those if you want
