If I upgraded to an i5 7500 from an i3 6100, do I need to buy a new motherboard with different chipset that supports kaby lake or just updating the bios of my current motherboard (with h110 chipset) will be sufficient?

Hi,

updating the BIOS with the old CPU would be just fine.

Regarding to updating the bios. Is there any risk to it?

I heard that updating it will have the possibility to brick the pc.

Is that true?

You should always make a backup of your PC before updating BIOS' and firmwares. However a BIOS update shouldn't do any damage.

Consult your motherboard manual or manufacturers webpage on how to do the update.
