Do I need ecc registered ram ?

Well its that bitter sweet time of year again when you need to upgrade your hardware. I am in need of some advice I'm going to build a dual cpu workstation for the type of work I do and is cpu heavy and demanding enough where a second one would definitely be a big help because the programs I use are able to utilize the second cpu. Now to my actual question I'm looking at the Asus Z10PE-D8 WS motherboard since I am not running a server and because ecc ram is vary expensive and to save a $1000 on ram to not ecc ram would be a no brainer . Any advice you guys could give me would be great , Thanks.

ECC Memory is required when using multiple CPUs. ECC Memory is not much more expensive than non-ECC memory.

You need either Registered DIMM or Load Reduction DIMM. Either way, it needs to be ECC.

You should use Load Reduction DIMMs. Generally, the capacities are much higher per DIMM with Load Reduction DIMMS. I've seen some DIMMs with up to 64 GB capacity per DIMM.

Many workstation motherboards don't require ECC ram.

 

I use dual xeons (broadwell and haswell) in about 15 workstations in the office wthout ECC Ram. It's not required unless specifically required by the Mobo manufacturer. Its not a specific intel requirement.

 

ECC for most desktop use cases is pointless.

What is the capacity of the sticks you use in these workstations?

We've got some with 4gb, 8gb, 16gb.... pretty much everything

Are you sure you have non-ECC memory? Sticks of 16 GB non-ECC memory are extremely difficult to find.

huh? 16gb non-ecc DIMMs are all over newegg.
