I want to get ubuntu on my old laptop just to give it some new life as an on the go internet browser system. Right now it takes about a minute to open up chrome and another minute to open up anything else. I have no idea how to install ubuntu. Its a 2009 sony vaio with original hdd installed and slightly upgraded ram (4 gigs instead of 2). Could anybody help?

Burn the .iso to a usb with Rufus.

Put it into the laptop.

Go to the BIOS and boot into the usb.

The installer will guide you.

There is a few guides on the Ubuntu site that should help you get started:

Install Ubuntu to a USB.

Boot from USB, might require going into the BIOS.

Run through the install procedure.

Once you get the USB booted, its fairly nice in that it leads you through it all.

There is a setting to leave it or delete it in the installer.

Takes a while to get used to. I have a helpful tip. It will ask for a password every time you install a application. It will bring up terminal and you will have to type it in. The trick is that it does not display the password you are typing, so don't be scared if you don't see anything, just type your password in and press enter. Weird Ubuntu thing.

You can always VirtualBox before hand and see if that is easier and fits your needs.

VirtualBox is Oracle's virtualization software. You can "host" a Ubuntu IS virtually, without actually installing it onto your hard drive. You give it a processor or two, RAM and other items, and you can use it as a normal Ubunto PC. But since it's virtualized, you cannot mess up your Windows OS with it.

The only thing I like better is Microsoft's Hyper-V; but that's only available on Windows 10 Pro, not home.
