Hi Forum users,

I have a Crucial 128 SSD as bootdrive for Windows 10. On this drive I store Windows 10 and some essential programs like Google Chrome. The problem is: I have only 18gb left.

I have a Gigabyte Extreme3 x99 motherboard with a "Ultra" M.2 slot and I was thinking about to upgrade my SSD to a 500gb capacity M.2 NVMe like the Samsung 960 EVO.

But the problem is: I don't want to install Windows and all the programs all over again. Is it possible to clone my SSD to this M.2 drive so I don't need to install Windows all over again? And when the answer is yes, which software do you guys advice me? Prefer free software but when it is a paid solution it is no problem.

Also a question: Is the Samsung 960 a good choice or have you guys any better idea?

Thanks in advance.

Yes

i have been cloning drives for years with acornis, it works fine

clone your old SSD to the new SSD, and then set the boot order priority to the new SSD

Ah great! Thanks for your comment.

Anyone who knows if the Samsung 960 EVO drive is compatible with the x99 motherboard? On Gigabyte's site I see only Samsung 951 NVMe as a compatible M.2 NVMe. Or maybe any other suggestions for this platform?

the samsung 960 ssd is a great performer but is known to have overheating issues.

I would strongly suggest the Intel 600p series of m.2 ssd. reliable and fast for a very reasonable price

Yes I read about it, but I also see it has only this problems in benchmarks and not on average. Maybe a Samsung 960 user who can tell me more about it? The intel 600p seems like a good solid choice, but I prefer the extra speed, because I buy this SSD especially for the better transfer rates.
