I have this old computer that I would like to use for a server. I am curently running Bohdi Linux, and am running into issues with running the server software. But it is very low-resource and does not use a lot of ram and processor. I have prouduct keys for Windows 7 Ultimate, and I'm wondering if I should switch over.

Here is the build:

Pentium Dual-Core E5200 (64 Bit)

4 GB DDR2

500 GB HD and 150 GB HD (Both Sata 7200 RPM)

Which one should be better for the computer with better performance?

Or should I switch over to a different version of Linux?

i don't know much about that distro but i know that ubuntu server is pretty lightweight but don't use windows that computer will explode from windows

The thing is that it was running Windows 7 Ultimate before with 2 GB of ram and a Pentium D.

Use this.

JK, use arch linux and install i3wm or openbox for your window manager or increase your server performance by a lot without one.

Ok I'll try a different version of Linux then.

I recommend arch and for a server, no window manager. This seems completely crazy but window managers put quite a load on your computer. Removing them makes your server run really well. However, your current specs just will not work for a server. Assuming you have a desktop, you should get this cpu and it should do a lot better but It sill won't run perfectly: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Intel-Core-2-Extreme-QX6850-SLAFN-3-0GHz-Quad-Core-LGA-775-CPU-Processor-km-/311809228423?hash=item4899473e87:g:UsYAAOSwnHZYdlU5

Also, maybe a ram upgrade would be good as well. I don't know your configuration but 8gb is the minimum I recommend

Seriously though, expect a server, not a fast one even with those upgrades. If you don't want to spend money, I don't blame you because upgrades are not cheap. I really do wish you luck though. I'm sure you will be satisfied with arch linux.
