Hello everyone who's reading this topic.

So my younger brother wants to get an R7 250 GPU but since I'm not sure if that GPU is compatible with x16 slot I'm here to ask if one of you guys might know the answer.

I tried to google it but I didn't get a clear answer.

So the question is can more advanced GPU's(like R7 250) run on this Motherboard or does he have to change MB with the CPU.

He has slightly older PC(2010)

Specs:

MB: Asus p5g41t-m lx3

GPU: AMD Radeon 6570

CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad

Thanks :)

You probably will mount it fine, but BIOS on that MB may not like it.
AMD's PCI-e 3.0 cards sometimes doesn't support 1.x mode (which that G41 MB uses).
I would go NV PCI-e 3.0 or stick to ATI/AMD PCI-e 2.0 cards.
And if he wants to play games, a better buy would be a x7x0 series from AMD or go GTX 6xx/7xx.

CPU : Core i7 6950X @ 4.26 GHz + Hydronaut + TRVX + 2x Delta 38mm PWM
MB : Gigabyte X99 SOC (BIOS F23c)
RAM : 4x Patriot Viper Steel 4000MHz CL16 @ 3042MHz CL12.12.12.24 CR2T @1.48V.
GPU : Titan Xp Collector's Edition (Empire)
M.2/HDD : Samsung SM961 256GB (NVMe/OS) + + 3x HGST Ultrastar 7K6000 6TB
DAC : Motu M4 + Audio Technica ATH-A900Z
PSU: Seasonic X-760 || CASE : Fractal Meshify 2 XL || OS : Win 10 Pro x64

100% bottleneck

What do you mean 100% bottleneck. He's not a hardcore gamer yet.

Yea it will absolutely. The card uses a PCIE 16x connector and that board has one. Just make sure you reinstall the drivers once you have put in the new card. You may have to do a clean install to prevent any problems.

Thank you.

I will use Guru to do driver stuff, I think that will suffice.

But is there any other GPU except R7 250 that can run on x16 slot.

I'm looking currently at R7 250x or higher.

Few dollars up and down for better perfomance.

Under AMD 2.0 you mean HD 7700 or something like that?

Yes. Radeon 5750/6770 or 6850/6870/6970 (depending on PSU/$ available).
Don't buy x4xx/x5xx series from AMD and GT x4x GPU's from NV, they suck :

gamer or not, bottleneck is a stupid thing and you should avoid it all all costs in my opinion

Well I pushed my GPU to it's deathbed and it's still singing like mermaid.

99.99% of graphics cards will be for PCIE 16x slots. Both nvidia and AMD have great cards for whatever your price range is.

Not sure if x16 bandwith can suck it up. Cus latest GPU's have higher BW then the ones in 2k10

@tiggar47 PCI-e bandwidth is redundant in your case : https://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/NVIDIA/GeForce_GTX_1080_PCI_Express_Scaling/24.html

He's playing on 1600x900 that means he will be able to use full specs of GPU?

Realistically even the highest end cards are fine on a pcie gen 2 8x connection which is equivalent to a gen 1 16x or a gen 3 4x. You will only see a bottle neck with Multi highend gpu.

Should I try installing my R9 380x into his MB to see if it works and do some Benchmarks to see how it performs?

You should, PSU shouldn't blow up at startup and if you see POST screen GPU is (usually) compatible with a given MB.

As for resolution :
It depends on GPU he buys and game/settings he will play at.
You can play on 1600:900, and maxed most GPUs with high enough Anti-Aliasing, High Res. Textures, etc.

Yeah but as mentioned if "his BIOS" doesn't detect or accept the GPU i will become suicidal.

You can't kill a GPU by trying it on working motherboard, if that's what you are worrying about :)

I know but wasting $$$$$ isn't good when you live in economy dead country.

Maybe I should get it installed in the shop where I intend to buy it to see with them to check out if it works :)

Anyways thank you all :)

That's why I suggested buying used/second hand card (better perf/$).
If he wants a brand new one (ie. not used), that's another story.

I have checked that allready... Getting used one doesn't give me any warranty or else so if it doesn't work it's useless.

With new one folks from the IT store might check out if it works with BIOS

It will most likely work absolutely fine. Because he has the x16 slot on his motherboard, he's going to be able to run the GPU at full speed, but the CPU he has in the system right now is definitely going to "bottleneck" the computer. Basically it's not going to give him the full performance of the GPU. So the next thing i would upgrade in his system would be the CPU, and then possibly the motherboard and the RAM at the same time. Maybe get a Intel core i5 6500, and a fitting motherboard, and then pair that with 8GB of DDR4 RAM.

His CPU is I think decent 4 cores 4 Threads running at 2.67 Ghz when OCed at 2.7 Ghz, so I think it's pretty solid.

If changing Mb and Cpu was the case I'd just get him APU then but budged is not that huge for i5 or else.
