Old pc new use?

GermanPCBuilder

Hey, so I got an old pc lying around that has some sort of AMD processor ( X || something I believe ) and 2gb of ddr3 ram. My question is what could I use this for? I'm open for everything that is or could be useful.

Sell the parts and make a magnetic screw tray out of the hard drive :)

Media machine for the living room perhaps?

Do this. But use either: Windows 7 Ultimate x32 (has media centre) or Windows Home Server (designed for file storage but works great for managing movies, videos etc and playback with media centre).

PC: Ryzen 7 2700 | RX 5700 XT | Asus Prime B450-PLUS | CoolerMaster Masterwatt 600W | 32GB Corsair Vengeance 3200MHz RAM | 512GB NVME SSD & 14TB combined HDD | macOS 14 Ventura, Windows 7 Ultimate x64 and WIndows 10 Pro x64

Laptop: MacBook Pro 15" 2015 | i7-4870HQ | R9 M370X | 16gb | 1tb SSD

iPhone 13 Pro Max | 256GB | iOS 16.5 with Dopamine 2 + Trollstore 2

You don't have to use Ultimate. Home Premium and Professional both have it.

That's quite a waste of something like this. This is still a very good computer.

First off, it was a joke. And your characterization of a "very good computer" is incorrect. It is a dual core processor from 2007. That means that this system is 10 years old or that he bought it after launch. 2GB of RAM will barely allow you to have more than 3-4 Chrome tabs open. I personally recommend using it as a dedicated Folding@Home rig, or just selling it on eBay or Craigslist. Although, it doesn't hurt to have a second PC. It could also be used as an HTPC.

You are right it can still be used for many purposes and if you upgrade it like LUKE (on LinusTechtips Youtube channel) did with his old Laptop, it can be a pretty damn good machine.:)

Turn it into a NAS?

No, I have 1,5tb if hdd space on my main gaming pc which is far more than enough for me. I don't understand how ppl can use so much of their storage that they would need to buy like 10tb hdds

Hmm, I'd hate to see what computer gave you such a bad impression of dual-cores with 2GB of RAM. I mean a very good computer as in something that can be used for YouTube, social media and other stuff. But 2GB of RAM should be more than enough RAM for about 15-17 Chrome tabs. I'd advised against an F@H machine, because the PSU is probably too old to be very efficient.

Efficiency is not the main concern of F@H. It isn't like Bitcoin where you are trying to turn a profit. Sure, 2GB of RAM is plenty for Youtube and social media stand alone, but just having LTT forums and Toms Hardware Forums is using 450MB of RAM. Thats about 9 Chrome tabs at best, but thats just forums. That doesn't involve HD video or ads.
