Okay. So fixing a machine for a family member. Old machine built in 1996, original hard drive, still works. It hasn't touched the internet in almost a decade, used almost daily.

My grandfather keeps it as a machine for holding onto tax records and information in general on Word 2003. The problem is that on startup the icons on the desktop don't show up at all, can't select them either. When I go into the file explorer I can get back to the desktop folder and everything that should be there is there, but the actual desktop icons aren't on the desktop. I've haven't messed around with Windows 2000 probably sense I was 6, no idea if this is an option hidden somewhere.

Thanks.

I have not used Windows 2000 at all, but maybe the desktop icons were hidden. try right clicking on the desktop, selecting view and make sure that the "show desktop icons is selected"

Forgive me if this is not a feature, i have never used windows 2000.

Turns out this was the issue.

There is an option right clicking on the desktop "active desktop" and the option "Show desktop icons" was unchecked.

I didn't even think this was an option I would fine actually on the desktop like this.

Thank you very much.
