Anniversary Update

Is it OK for my computer to be updating to the Anniversary Update only just now? It came out in November, so I'm surprised its only just updated today.

My computer has been trying for the past 2+ weeks. It never completely finishes and then restores back to the previous version. I got sick of the notifications so I disabled windows updates for the time being.

it's never actually told me about it, and i've never checked windows update so i assumed that there was no updates available

Your PC will pick it up randomly. Mine still hasn't. Some of our customers have recently had an influx of them. It isn't bad fi you're only just getting them however the server, on MS' end, might be slow at communicating with your machine etc..
