If you had to get it right now, I'm not sure; I might go with a 280X because of the noise... But if you can wait a few weeks or so for the the aftermarket cooler versions of the 290 to release I'd definitely go that route.

290 non reference cooler . for the 100$ difference you cant compare to two cards when it comes to performance.

im planing on getting one of these  gpu's. it is mainly for gaming (Bf4 :D) and both are within my budget. Just wondering what others would do :) thanks

What is your configuration? What resolution are you gaming at? Without that information we just can't give you an educated answer.

I'd say a 290 no contest, but that wouldn't make much sense if you game on 1600x900 rez, and a core2, or athlon/phenom processor...

I sold my 6950 yesteday and I am now running the onboard gpu so i have the same question 280x or 290.

Yesterday I was thinking the 280x has 5 fps less in a crysis 3 so €80 isn worth 5 fps.

Today I saw a benchmark from bf3 and the 290 has 20 fps more!

So I think im gonna get a 290 and look for a other cooler because 95 degree is too hot imo.

If there isnt a cooler for the 290 Maybe i go for 280x crossfire

The Radeon R9 290 is a high end card with the price to performance ratio of a mid-level card like the Radeon R9 280X. Definitely go with the R9 290 if it's in your budget.

I would wait for aftermarket 290 so you will be able to overclock the card in the future.

if i were you, id pick the r9 290.

in new zealand some of the r9 280x (ie asus matrix) is about 550-650 dollars. where as the r9 290 is only 679 dollars

worth the little extra cash to beat gtx 780s in my opinion.
