Hey guys I'm new to this site so thanks in advance for the advice. I am going to start building my first PC and it needs to be a multi purpose PC. I like to video edit, usually Gopro Footage at 1080p and also I want this pc to be able to game efficiently as well with demanding games like GTA or Battlefield. I want to be able to do both efficiently. I have a budget of about 700-800 USD to spend on the PC alone. Im not sure as to what monitor, keyboard, or mouse to get yet so that would be helpful as well. Right now I'm on a iMac, but its shared so i rather have my own set up. I don't know if what I'm asking for is doable in my price range but any information would help!

Thank you again!

If you're looking to build an editing workstation also. I suggest just for right now hold out until RYZEN comes out since their lowest of the 3 release is a 317$ 8 core 16 thread processor. The Intel equivalent to this is an i7-7700k which is a 4 core 8 thread processor @350$ can be found for 320$ when on sale. At least until we see user benchmarks of the RYZEN CPUs.

EDIT: What you will find now are LEAKED benchmarks. AMD really likes to benchmark stuff that beats their competitors in about 1 specific application and loses in every other application. For example, they benchmarked Ashes of the Singularity RX 480 Crossfire beats a GTX 1080 but user benchmarks shows that in every other game the RX 480 crossfire loses by a big amount.

If you want to get an intel 6 core 12 thread (which is what I suggest if you're going for video editing also) 2 years to current you're gonna have to shell out 450$+. Unless you get the i7-39xx series which can be found used for 160$ since they are out of production.

so maybe waiting would be the best thing to do as far as CPU just to see act happens when it comes out.

I don't know much much video editing you'd actually do. But even if I did casual video editing like 3 videos/week I would never go with an i5 personally. No hyperthreading.

If you're actually gonna video edit, more cores/thread will actually help you A LOT! Even if the Ryzen is clocked lower which it will be cause more cores in a chip = more heat.

Yeah, but without affecting gaming performance or upping budget to $900 USD, it's literally impossible to fit an i7 into this machine.

That's absolutely true but he'll have to sacrifice some things, maybe even scourge craigslist/eBay and try to get good deals on used stuff so he can get the better CPU. Because at the end of the day a stronger PSU, etc. wont matter.

It is casual. usually editing about 2 or 3 times a week for sure!

Well it will, you don't want to have your $800 PC turn into a firebomb because you cheaped out on the PSU. PSU's pretty cheap and good quality as well, so I'd keep it.

The question is, are you in a rush? Because unless you can wait, buying everything now you won't get a good price. Also scourge craigslist/eBay to find really good deals.

I've seen really good deals as far as PSU, Thermaltake Gold 80+ 750w for 43$ and 16GB ADATA 2400mhz DDR4 for 73$

Wouldn't take a TT PSU used, since the old units suck but the newer ones are quite good.

I didn't mean buy a unknown cheap PSU, I meant not get a 1000w PSU or the latter for a 300 Watt TDP Computer.

No I am not in a rush to buy, right now I'm just trying to do my research as to what would be the best options for me, for this build. So i can look for these parts and see when they go on sale and whats compatible with what.

Things you can cheap out on:

1) RAM, even if the timings and CAS Lat. are less than average (none are really terrible), but I'd suggest 16GB of RAM for Video Editing, 8 is fine. But more RAM = faster since it will use it all at 1 time when it's rendering.

2) Case, this is all personal preference, buy used if you can since it's just a case.

3) Motherboard, all modern motherboards are good

4) Fans, you probably won't even have to buy any, fans can be pretty expensive

5) SSD, just buy the cheapest one any SSD over 500MB/s rated are good enough. And any higher you won't notice a real world difference for what you're using it for.

thank you for this, question, Buying CPUs used isnt a bad idea? what do i look for in buying used parts?

would the i7 be the 100 dollar difference in my budget, would it be that much worth it?

Honestly, buy anything on eBay. eBay will always and I mean ALWAYS take your side, even if they don't PayPal will ALWAYS take your side if the seller says Product is working but it isn't working or it isn't working as good as it's supposed to. If that is the case, eBay will pay for return shipping. If not, PayPal will pay for return shipping up to $20. 20$ can ship a 6 pound product from west coast to east coast.

I suggest anything 6 Core, but the only 6 core that are cheap are now is i7-39xx which sells for 160$ on eBay. Those also run toasty. The i7-5820k will set you back 400$+ and that's only a 6 core 12 thread. RYZEN is 8 Core 16 Thread for 317$.

This is why we suggest waiting for RYZEN. But new motherboards are usually a lot. Expect at least 150$ for the new AM4+ motherboards for RYZEN.

As of right now, wait for RYZEN. Because logically, 8 Core 16 Threads is doubled 4 Core 8 Threads so theoretically it should be double the performance right? No, it is not linear. And you will have to wait for user benchmarks to figure this out. But since they are literally in the same price point, I'd suggest waiting.

The i5-6600k is 4 Cores no thread and the i7-6700k is 4 cores 8 threads. In rendering it is 25-40% faster. Most applications these days support hyperthreading, it just depends on how optimized they are at using them.

http://www.hardware.fr/articles/940-9/cpu-rendu-3d-mental-ray-v-ray.html

In Maya, the 4 extra threads of the i7 shaved of 100s, from 395s of the i5 to 295s of the i7, a 25% increase

In Studio3D, it shaved off 127s, from 384 to 257, a 33% increase

So basically, less waiting time. Since when you use render, your CPU is used 100% so you can NOT use it for anything else since it will be super laggy. That means you can use your computer faster or upload a video faster since you won't have to wait as long.

Now, take what you saw going from 4 core to 4/8 then imagine it going to 8/16 (Core/Thread). That is theoretically Double Doubled so 4x the performance of the i5. Theoretically!! But as you could see, from the i5 to the i7 didn't give you double the performance.

EDIT: Let me also list price, the i5-6600k 230$, i7-6700k 330$, RYZEN 1700 317$.

I used the 6xxx because they were more user benchmarked.

Also I would suggest you get the RX 480 8GB. Because that is the cheapest GPU with the highest VRAM possible. Higher VRAM helps boost 4k rendering faster. But not so much 1080p rendering. They are also only 190$-200$
